Brisbane Pride festival is one of my favourite parts of Brisbane culture. There’s so much going on that I don’t even know which part of the festival I want to see the most.
The Brisbane Pride Festival started in the 1900s. It was a way for the LGBT+ community to organise and promote public events and activities that contribute to queer culture.
The first event that was held as a Rally and March through the streets of Brisbane which ended with a gathering at Musgrave Park, South Brisbane.
For over 13 years the Festival was run by a collective, however, as of 2002 it was Incorporated. Pride is now Queensland’s largest and Australia’s third largest Gay and Lesbian event, attracting more than 50,000 Festival-goers over a four week period in the spring month of September every year.
The main event of the Pride Fair Day is an inclusive, community-based celebration run by Brisbane Pride Inc who are a non-profit organisation which is operated by a voluntary board and working committee.
The Brisbane Pride Festival is a celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender culture through arts, sport, community and political events. The festival aims to bring together the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of Brisbane together. This process is to unite the LGBT+ community and through media coverage, advertisements and public visibility to expand the wider community.
There are many events during the massive four-week long festival however, many of these events haven’t released much information given that the Pride Festival isn’t usually celebrated until September each year.
There is an event that is coming up that is held by the Brisbane Pride community that celebrate influential people within the LGBTI+ community.
The 57th Annual Queens Ball Awards will be held on June 16th 2018. The Queens Ball aims to celebrate community and continue the tradition of being the longest running LGBTI+ event, not just in Australia but worldwide.
