It's here. What we've all been waiting for. Deadpool is back. Yes, that's right. Our favourite cancer victim has stolen the limelight yet again, and in what better way than with Deadpool 2.
The picture below is a snippet from the opening credits. I found these opening credits highly amusing, more so than the first film's – although, I admit, those were pretty good as well. If something as small as a film's opening credits can hook, line and sinker me then the rest of the film is bound to be a delight.
Surprise, surprise, the rest of the film is quite indeed a showstopper. I'm here to share the highlights this film has to offer so, enough babbling, and let's get to it.
We see some memorable characters returning in this sequel, these characters including the Russian Iron Man Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead (or, as we know her from the last film, 'long, sullen silence or mean comment'), and not to mention Dopinder, our Indian friend who, last time we saw him, kidnapped his cousin and locked him in the boot of his taxi.
Sadly, we do not find out whether Dopinder kills his cousin Bandhu and gets the girl of his dreams, though judging by his comment from this film of wanting to be a contract killer, we can assume that his cousin and Gita are living a daffodil daydream without him.
Speaking of daffodil daydreams, our anti-hero Deadpool doesn't get to live out his either. His long-time partner, Vanessa, is taken from him in a scene that is both heart-breaking and anti-climactic. I mean, come on. They were going to have babies. We could have had little Deadpools running around with potty mouths. How fun would that have been?
That being said, it opens the film up to its full potential: Deadpool being Deadpool, kicking ass and saving the day.
Not only does this film re-introduce old characters, but it introduces new ones. These new characters include a few that die rather quickly (woodchipper, cough, cough) and a few that stick around to either help Deadpool or hinder his journey.
Firefist, also known as Russel, and if you want to, 'that Kiwi little sh*t', is the character that our anti-hero sets out to save, not only from himself but from Cable, a time-travelling wannabe Bucky Barnes (or Thanos, if you will) with a vengeance that wants Russell's diabetic heart on a platter.
Two new characters I grew to love the most in this film were Domino, a happy-go-lucky (literally) character that uses her mutant powers to assist Deadpool in stopping Cable, and Yukio, Negasonic's cute-as-a-button girlfriend, whose pastel hair and sweet voice made me fangirl a little. These two characters, aside from Deadpool himself, were a good side-platter of comic relief.
Another major character that makes an appearance in the film is Juggernaut, someone you may remember from X-Men: The Last Stand. He's still a baddie in Deadpool 2. In fact, he just might be the main antagonist in Deadpool 3, if we ever get the opportunity to see that hitting cinemas in the next couple of years (extra spoiler: we probably will if the end credits gave any indication).
If you have nothing better do this weekend, I highly suggest going to see this film. If you know you have a strong stomach that can handle depraved humour (there is a small quantity of pedo jokes that may be too inappropriate for certain spectators) and gore coming at you left, right and centre, then this is the sequel for you.
