Have you ever wanted something new to do with the family or a cute date night? Or you simply just want a change and get to watch a movie under the stars? Well Brisbane City has thought of that for you! Most moonlight cinemas do cost like normal cinemas but luckily this one is completely and utterly free. All you have to do is pay for food! It’s something that kids and adults of all ages can come and enjoy and even have a good time at. If you like Disney, kids movies, comedy, classics, sci-fi ... Anything really then you’ll enjoy this event.
Brisbane’s own Roma street parklands is now home to one of the only few moonlight cinemas that won’t cost you a cent. They play family favourites so everyone can watch the movies and not have to leave at certain times in case of kids or sit there arguing over what movie to watch. The best thing is you don’t even need to wait in line for food but in case you want to get food while you watch your movie they have that sorted as well with food trucks serving everything from hot dogs to hot wings. They even have a smoothie bar “food truck” as well so all you have to do is worry about how you’re going to get there and what time you want to leave and even then it’s open till late if you’re on a date night.
Luckily this event isn’t a late starter either, the movies begin showing at six pm to eight pm and if you get there at five pm just an hour earlier you can have first dibs at the food trucks and get a good spot in the park. All you have to do is bring chairs or a picnic rug, a blanket and if you desire a picnic to the Roma street parklands. The next date for the moonlight cinema is the 21st of May when they will be showing a kids favourite, Paddington and the 1980’s film The Man from Snowy River. So you could definitely say they have something for everyone covered when it comes to picking out films for everyone to watch.
If you’re stuck for something fun to do for mother’s day they also have a mother’s day eve event on the 12th of May where they will be showing beauty and the beast. This event starts at 4pm and goes to 8:30pm where not only will they be showing a movie but they also will be having live music playing from 4pm. Like their usual events they will have food trucks so instead of cooking on mother’s day you can buy some delicious food and watch a great Disney movie and let mum have a relaxing evening without all the worry of dinner and what to do with her day. Making it easy and less stressful for everyone planning something special for their mums, grandmas and even aunts.
To make things even better they even have a special Christmas event where they show Elf, Love Actually, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Deck the Halls and The Polar Express plus a few extra movies. The best part about the Christmas event is that it starts from the 8th and goes to the 17th of December. Every movie they show is free and you can still enjoy food trucks and live music. The event starts from 6pm every movie night so you don’t need to worry about staying up late all you need to worry about is what movie and day you want to go. If you’re sick of watching the same old Christmas movies 8 times on every other channel on the television why not go out for the night and watch a classic once and have a fun time doing it.
Valentine’s Day may be hard for some, trying to think of a place for dinner, what to buy, what’s romantic enough to make someone feel special. Well they have even done an event for Valentine’s Day! If you want to go for a special date and don’t know what to do, you can go to Roma street parklands, watch a movie under the stars, get some amazing food from the food trucks and listen to some live music before the movie begins and have a whole night worry free about how you’re going to sweep that person off their feet.
For the little ones they even have Disney nights where they put on movies like Frozen and make a movie night into a fun time out for the little ones. They even have a dress up competition for the night for the little ones to join in on and even win some cool prizes for joining in. It keeps not only parents and grandparents relaxed but let’s the kids have a fun time out of the house where they can’t make any trouble for themselves or destroy the house for the 4th time that afternoon.
These events happen at least once a month except if there’s a holiday such as Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day then they make an extra day event or as Christmas they make a whole week event.
If you’re worried about how you’re going to get there and about parking then the worry is gone. It’s easy enough to get to by train or bus but if you want to drive there’s plenty of cheap parking in the shopping centres so you only have a short distance to walk and save some money from the street parking and if you don’t want to do either you can easily catch a lift or an Uber to Roma street parklands.
If you aren’t good at planning, can’t think of anything to plan, aren’t romantic, just want to do something fun with the family, young, old or have a child this event is definitely a new version of movie and chill. It’s a fun time out with the family or your partner that isn’t going to break the bank.
They post up each event up on the Brisbane City Facebook page so everyone and anyone can check out what movie or movies they will be playing, what time they will be opening up the Moonlight Cinema and if there’s going to be live music and what food trucks will be there for that night. It’s Brisbane’s way of giving back to the community and letting families save some money rather than spending more than they should do to go out and have a good time and that is also easy to access and you get a whole night of entertainment out of it.
So keep an eye out on their Facebook page for upcoming dates, movies and times otherwise you might miss out on a classic or even a dress up night for the kids or even yourself if you’re a kid at heart.
