Ready, Set, Scribble Slam!

Article written by Valeria Lasso.

Ever since I moved to Brisbane, I’ve heard plenty of people say that there is nothing cool to do here. That, my friends, is a big ass lie. There are way too many fun activities to do here in Brisbane and sometimes all you have to do is be aware of social media to find out about upcoming events that are sure to be some good fun.

This week I’ll be making things easier for you. You don’t even have to look for an event to go to. Nope, I’m bringing it to you. So, get off your butt and let’s go have some fun.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at Scribble Slam, a live art battle. It takes place once a month in their set location. Their dates can change but as of present time, it is taking place in Ric’s Backyard in the Valley on the first Sunday of each month from 6 PM to 9 PM. If you want to be sure in the future, I recommend going on their Facebook page just to verify this information.

Scribble Slam consists of two artists battling each other for 90 minutes. If it isn’t obvious enough, no, they are not swinging swords at each other. They are given a blank wall (2.4m x 2.4m) and are allowed to use any artistic medium they choose to create an artwork. Both of the artists have no idea what they’ll be asked to paint until the clock has already started its countdown. The artists will be provided with a theme and so it starts.

The two street artists that will be facing off this month are Xandolino (Ig: @xandolinoo) and Reuben Stocks (Ig: @dank_zappa). The MC will be Shani Finch and the DJ providing us with amazing music will be DJ Jai.

Both artists’ social media are filled with their art, and let me tell you, it is out of this world. I am not kidding guys. It’s striking. If you don’t believe me just take a look.

Just by looking at it I’m ten times more excited to see what they come up with during their battle. I don’t know what it will be, but I can assure you that whatever it is, it’s going to be awesome.

If you’ve never seen a live art battle before, this is your chance! Come along and enjoy the night with all the other art lovers that will be attending. You’ll have the chance to meet new people and if you’re an artist yourself, you can consider participating next time.

The reviews for this event are quite high and it is clear that a lot of people enjoyed their time the night of the event. Someone even said it was their ‘best night out in years.” That’s convincing enough for me.

Seeing as this Sunday will be 1st of July, I have decided to attend, and honestly, I can’t wait. I usually have very high expectations when I go to events, especially if they have high reviews. I make up scenarios in my head of what it will be like, what it’s going to look like and most of the time it turns out nothing like I expected. Sometimes it’s worse. Other times it’s sooo much better, and I’m hoping this is one of those times. I count on having a lot of fun that night and who knows, maybe it’ll become an event that I will continue to attend every month.

A couple of writers from the blog will be attending this event as well and we are all very excited to see what goes down that night. If you see us, come up to us and say hi. Tell us what you think of the event and if you’d consider attending next month. In case you don’t know how to recognize us, you can see pictures of what we look like in our ‘Meet the Team’ section of the blog. Now, there are no excuses to not say hi to us.

Did I mention the event is free? If I didn’t, I’m telling you now. It’s completely free. The only thing you’d have to consider spending money on is food and drinks. But if you’re only going for the art, well then, you won’t spend a penny.

We hope to see you there, but if you can’t make it, there’s always next month… and the month after that and the one after that. You get what I mean. Give it a go, it might be one of the best nights of your life for all you know.

Share this article with your friends that might enjoy attending this event. If you don’t get a chance to chat with us that night leave me a comment and tell me what you thought of it.
